Here  are some thoughts on approaching preaching biblically, based on our primary preaching training course outline at NCF.

Preparation to preach

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” – 2 Timothy 4 v 1

God glorifying, Christ centred Gospel preaching

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.” – Galatians 1 v 8

Exegesis or Hermeneutics
(the interpretation of the text)

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” – 2 Tim 2 v 15

Homiletics

“And when he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew language, saying.” – Acts 21 v 40

Structuring a sermon

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” – Luke 24 v 27

Contextualisation :

“For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law.21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.” – 1 Cor 9 v 19

Preaching for a verdict

“And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?” And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am-except for these chains.” – Acts 26 v 28-29

Prophetic preaching

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,…” Acts 4 v 8

Special meetings, and working with a team

“I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain.” – Galatians 1 v 2

What qualifies you to preach

“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” – 1 Corinthians 9 v 27

Learning from other preachers, how to listen to a sermon.

“…and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” – 2 Tim 2 v 2
