This is an overview of preaching is designed to remind the preacher of vital components in preaching as well as a focus on how to sharpen your preaching skills.

1. Preparing the preacher to preach.

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”- 2 Timothy 4:1

  • personal life , what qualifies ( disqualifies ) you to preach
  • understanding the great privilege of preaching
  • study
  • understanding your audience & understanding your brief
  • hearing God
  • honor

2. God glorifying, Christ centered Gospel preaching

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.” – Galatians 1:8

  • regardless of the Topic all preaching must Glorify and centre on Christ
  • preachers are heralds of Gods message, they are representing Jesus , not themselves
  • how to include Jesus in the preach
  • asking questions that point to Christ

3. Exegesis or Hermeneutics ( the interpretation of the text).

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” – 2 Tim 2 :15

  • how to read the text
  • methods of interpretation

4. Homiletics

“And when he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew language, saying:…” – Acts 21:40

  • how we present is as important as what we present
  • zeal for God
  • engaging audiences

5. Structuring a sermon

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” Luke 24:27

  • preaching themes
  • preaching line by line
  • preaching with one big idea in mind
  • preaching length
  • introductions, conclusions
  • moving from one big idea to another

6. Contextualisation

“I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.” – 1 Cor. 9:22

  • understanding the audience – reading the culture
  • reaching different ages, races, economic strata
  • being relevant without diluting the message
  • preaching platforms– using media
  • using illustrations

7. Preaching for a verdict

“And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”29 And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am-except for these chains.” –  Acts 26:28

  • what change are you looking for

  •  every sermon should have two verdicts, one for the unsaved & one for the saved

 8.Prophetic preaching

“Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders” – Acts 4:8

  • understanding the anointing in preaching
  • Holy Spirit can speak to you months in advance. Changing direction 2minutes before a message is delivered does not make you more spiritual, it normally means its taken you a long time to finally hear God.
  • always preach as if it were the last sermon you will ever preach

 9. Working with a team

“I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain.” – Galatians 1:2

  • you can learn from those most like you
  • look for the X factor, what is God using

12. Preaching blunders, dealing with issues, learning from mistakes

  • recovering from a mistake
  •  “Monday morning”
